Why Choose Terrapin Farms for your Dorper Breeding Stock

The Dorper breed is a breed that emerged from South Africa just less than 100 years ago.
Despite being relatively new, they provide various benefits to the shepard. For one, they do not
need any shearing since they are vastly different from wool sheep.

Strong and Adaptable

Strong and Adaptable

Dorpers are a highly adaptable breed of sheep. They can survive the Texas climate outdoors on the pasture.

Great Maternal Qualities

Great Maternal Qualities

Ewes can be excellent mothers and heavy milkers. That is why lambs are vigorous and have a high survivability rate.

Long Breeding Season

Long Breeding Season

Dorpers can be managed to produce three lamb crops in two years. Or, they can easily be managed to produce a lamb crop when you want it. At Terrapin Farms we manage our flock to produce lamb year round.

Reproductive Efficiency

Reproductive Efficiency

Dorper sheep are fertile and prolific. Lambing rates of 180% are typical.

Non-Selective Grazers

Non-Selective Grazers

Dorper sheep are superb converters of various types of forage. They can also be a great option for grazing or weed control operations.

Tolerant to Heat and Insects

Tolerant to Heat and Insects

Dorper sheep have a natural tolerance to high temperatures and insect populations. In fact, the Texas hill country is quite similar to the South African environment where the breed was developed. The Dorper Breed has a higher tolerance to copper compared to other breeds of sheep, therefore, copper can be used for a natural anti-parasite treatment.

Sheep Raised Well

At our farm, we aim to treat our animals as humanely as possible. We let them grow up in the pastures and have them stay in family groups their entire lives. The tails of the ewes are docked for sanitary purposes.

There are no milk bars and factory farms on our premises to further ensure their well-being. Throughout the year, we let them eat fresh grass or hay we’ve baled ourselves instead of raising them in feedlots. In additional to grass they eat mixed feed, multi-grain, and high mineral supplement. By providing them with a balanced diet, adequate minerals, vitamins, and nutrients, we ensure our lambs live a healthy life.

85% of our breeding rams and ewes are type 4s and 5s. This is according to the website of the American Dorper Sheep Breeders Society (ADSBS).

BUYING BREEDING STOCK FROM TERRAPIN FARMS

At Terrapin Farms, we mange our breeding program in order to produce market ram lambs of appropriate weight all year-round.  This means we also have ewes at various stages of growth year-round as well.

We sell ewes after they are fully weaned and ready for separation from their family unit, after 4 months of age. We don't recommend breeding maiden ewes until they are at least 10 months old, and preferably 1-year old.  Depending on availability, we offer registered ewe lambs (4-12 months old), open (unbred) or bred ewes (12-24 months old).  Since inventory is constantly evolving, we don't post pictures of ewes for sale, so it's best to contact us to determine availability.
